You can always find sets for well under $500, and for the increase in amount of weights, strength of the equipment, and planning for the future it is one of the best investments you can make.
As you start looking for your Olympic bar you will quickly discover both 6 foot and 7 foot lengths. The 7 foot length is considered the standard length, but the 6 foot bar works better for many home gyms. The bars are not necessarily stronger at either length. Always check the rating carefully. If you plan on having more than one bar in your workout area make sure you label each bar with the rating. You do not want to accidentally place a bar rated for 300 pounds in a station where you may exceed the weight. Safety should always be your first concern.
