Weight Lifting At Home – Getting The Right Equipment Is Half The Battle
Weight lifting at home adds a new element to working out. It is much more convenient than running to the gym, but adds a certain element of risk which is absent in most gym environments. In the gym you have the added safety of one important component, a spotter.
Most people investing in equipment for weight lifting at home do not think about how much help you receive in a gym. When you are doing a bench press with heavy weights in the gym, you can call someone over to spot for you, and assist you if you cannot complete a repetition. At home, if you are working out alone with free weights, and you get stuck with a heavy weight on your chest, you could be in trouble.
For home equipment, you need to closely examine the safety features of your equipment. In most cases free weights are the preferred way to lift, but for working out at home alone a good fitness center is much safer. These machines will have built in stops, and protective measures to make sure you cannot get trapped under the weight. Your workouts will be slightly less efficient than handling free weights, but the added safety is worth it.
Make sure any equipment you buy allows for doing squats, bench presses, and leg curls at a minimum. Machines with cable attachments will give you even more opportunity at creating a great body. Check into the maximum weight you can work with on your home equipment. If the machine is only going to allow you a maximum resistance of 100 to 150 pounds it is probably not worth buying. For the bench press and squats you will quickly exceed those weights, and your progress will come to a stand still.
Evaluate the amount of space you have for weight lifting at home. Many of these home gyms require a large amount of floor space. Sometimes the best place for the equipment is the garage or the basement. They give you a concrete floor for stability, and often have more free room around the equipment. You will not need to worry about making noise and disturbing everyone if it is out of the way, too.
If you are planning on working out with a partner who you can trust to be there for every workout, then check into free weights. They will save you money, and give you a better workout. You must use not only the primary muscles, but all of the balancing, and support muscles when working with free weights. No matter what equipment you choose to use for weight lifting at home, make sure you keep an eye on safety, and then workout hard. Since you are working out at home you will not be getting the same motivation and camaraderie you have in the gym, so plan a great selection of music, and other motivational means to keep you pumped up. The only good home gym is the one which is getting used often.
