Weight Lifting Class – Technique And Commitment Required
You walk into the local fitness center and you see a sign for a weight lifting class and you just laugh. You know how to lift weights, you did it back in high school. You walk over to the area set aside for the free weights and see all the fancy benches, racks, and weights. Then you see the guys doing all kinds of lifts you never tried before. You feel a little intimidated. A weight lifting class is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of commitment to excel and improve. Get yourself off on the right foot and watch your progress soar.
A weight lifting class usually takes one of two forms. The first style of class is a group of people learning about the equipment, lifts, techniques, and practicing together. It is a great way to meet new people, find training partners, and have spotters you are comfortable with quickly.
The second style of weight lifting class is a one on one experience. You are hiring a trainer to work with you for a day or longer to get you up to speed on proper equipment usage, techniques, and designing a workout program to meet your goals.
Both styles of classes can be highly beneficial. The best choice is often to start off with a group setting to get the basics out of the way and to establish some great relationships in the gym. You are always going to want to have a buddy to help spot and by meeting some people right away it is much easier.
After you have been through a group class is the perfect time to sign up for a one on one class with a trainer. You can skip past a lot of the basics and get more in depth questions answered, work harder on designing your program, and have them critique your techniques and make adjustments. You will get more than twice the benefits out of the one on one session if you have been through group training. Make sure the trainer knows you have been through the group class first.
While you may feel a little silly signing up for a class if you have lifted many times before it is still very beneficial. You can learn new lifts, have your techniques reviewed and improved, and enhance your workout experience. None of us know everything about lifting weights and learning a few new tips can make the difference between consistently great workouts and injury plagued workouts.
Some weight lifting classes go far beyond what we have just discussed. These classes stick together for months becoming closely bonded, creating great groups who motivate and inspire each other. No matter what kind of class you choose to become involved with you can be sure of one thing. Your techniques and improvement will increase. You will gain new knowledge which allows you to push your workouts to a new level. It is a wise investment in time and money instead of struggling with improper form and prolonged learning.
